Shepherds of Good Hope

Since 1983 the Shepherds of Good Hope have been providing food, lodging, emotional and spiritual support to anyone that comes to them.   They provide an invaluable service to the poor and troubled of Ottawa, and by helping deal with these problems are providing a service for all of us in the area.   We thank them for their invaluable work.

Each weekend the Third World Bazaar will be collecting food and consumables for the Shepherds.  We ask that our customers consider bringing non-perishable donations to the Bazaar, which we will deliver each week.   In 2006 we were able to collect the equivalent of 8 Shopping Carts, in 2005 it was 7.   We hope to continue this growth in donations this year.

Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is the world?s leading independent medical relief organization.   Their mandate is primarily focused on emergency relief and they often operate in areas where there is no medical infrastructure.  For over 35 years they have been providing medical help to people caught in armed conflicts, floods, earthquakes, disease epidemics and famines.  MSF has maintained their international reputation as one of the most respected, honest and well run aid organization.

Our niece, Asha provides a personal connection to this worthy organization.   Asha has worked with MSF since 2003 and in Canada, Uganda, Indonesia, Ivory Coast and now Barcelona.

We welcome any contribution you can make to the efforts of MSF.    The owners of Third World Bazaar will match any contribution that patrons make.  We challenge our customers to contribute as much as they feel comfortable donating.

In 2005 our Patrons contributed $3,229.87 and then in 2006 they contributed $2,838.12 (with our contribution the total came to $6,459.74 and $5,676.24 respectively).   In 2007 we hope to be able to make a total donation of over $7,000!   Please help support the award-winning work of MSF.

BullFrog Power (Clean Reliable Electricity)

The Province of Ontario is facing a very serious electricity challenge over the next 20+ years.   Our coal plants are dirty and expensive and our nuclear facilities are nearing the end of their operational life.   Over the next decade much of the capacity will have to be replaced.  But with what?  More dirty coal? Government subsidized, and dangerous nuclear?  Or a wide range of renewable sources?   Everyone is concerned with costs.  With renewables, the upfront costs are higher, but the operational costs are lower.   As we all know there is nothing free, only the illusion of free.

The Third World Bazaar through BullFrog Power, utilizes electricity that is produced exclusively from wind and low-impact water power generators.  The small premium we pay helps ensure that new renewable sources of power can be brought on stream in Ontario, and hopefully slow the growth of dangerous, expensive and subsidized nuclear energy.

If you would like to know more about what this forward thinking company is doing please visit their web site.
